We combine registration or transfer in, every future renewal year, recurring WHOIS privacy, and mandatory annual fees (such as ICANN $0.18/yr). Optional upsells are excluded.
100-Point Evidence Rubric
Confidence measures data veracity, not customer support. Points reward live endpoint reachability, field completeness, low latency, and zero data invention.
Uncompromising Independence

The Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) Formula

TCO(N) = Acquisition + [Renewal × (N - 1)] + [(Privacy + Mandatory Fees) × N]- Acquisition: Standard initial registration price, promotional first-year fee (if term conditions are met), or incoming registrar transfer fee if the domain is already owned.
- Renewal: Recurring annual price to maintain domain ownership in years 2 through N.
- Privacy: Perpetual annual fee for WHOIS proxy protection (treated as $0.00 for registrars offering free privacy).

100-Point Evidence Verification Rubric
Every published row displays a Data Confidence score from 0 to 100. This metric strictly scores the verifiable authenticity and technical reliability of the price evidence:

Points awarded when the registrar's official pricing page or API endpoint responds with HTTP 200 OK directly during search execution.
Complete Field Extraction
Requires explicit published data for standard registration, promotional conditions, mandatory renewals, incoming transfers, and WHOIS privacy fees.
Live Extraction Pipeline
Awarded when pricing is successfully parsed from the active HTML or JSON payload in real time rather than relying on a cached snapshot.
Snapshot Freshness (Max 7 Days)
When live extraction encounters bot-protection or temporary upstream blocks, verified snapshots are valid for a maximum of 7 days before automated expiration.
Mandatory Checkout Fee Accounting
Full disclosure of ICANN mandatory annual registry fees ($0.18/yr for gTLDs), local regulatory taxes, or payment gateway fees.
Zero Invention Policy: If a registrar does not publicly publish standard renewal or transfer pricing for an extension, TrueDomainCost explicitly leaves the field empty rather than generating estimated multipliers.

1. Real-Time Parallel Fetching
When a user compares a domain or TLD, our backend initiates parallel HTTP GET requests to official pricing tables across all verified registrars. Responses are parsed in milliseconds, verifying current promotions and currency exchange rates.
2. 7-Day Snapshot Fallback Window
When an upstream registrar protects its pricing table behind aggressive bot barriers (Cloudflare challenge, reCAPTCHA), we rely on manually verified snapshots with a strict 7-day expiration limit. Snapshots older than 7 days are automatically withheld.
3. Real-Time FX Currency Conversion
Multi-currency views utilize daily reference exchange rates from the European Central Bank (Frankfurter API) with zero markup, giving you accurate local currency estimates for international providers.

How is the True Cost of Ownership (TCO) calculated?
For a chosen ownership term of N years, TrueDomainCost calculates: TCO = First-Year Acquisition (Registration or Transfer) + Renewal Price × (N - 1) + (Annual Privacy Fee + Annual Mandatory ICANN Fee) × N. Optional add-ons (like email hosting or site builders) are excluded so you compare pure domain ownership.
Why do you show both 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year views?
Many registrars market aggressive loss-leader introductory discounts (e.g. $1 for year one) while charging $22+ on annual renewals. A 1-year view highlights entry promos, but 3-year and 5-year views reveal the real multi-year cost.
How does the 100-point Data Confidence score work?
Data Confidence measures the quality, completeness, and recency of the evidence behind each price row. It does not measure customer support or user satisfaction. A 100/100 score indicates that the registrar's official pricing page was live, reachable, fully parsed in real time, and all renewal/privacy fields were complete.
Do commercial affiliate links influence registrar rankings?
Never. Rankings are strictly ordered by the mathematical Total Cost of Ownership for your chosen term. If two registrars have identical totals, the higher Data Confidence score breaks the tie. Outbound links may include affiliate tags where active, but this has zero effect on placement.
How does RDAP registration checking work?
When a domain name is searched, TrueDomainCost checks official RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) servers in real time. If the domain is already registered, the engine automatically pivots to transfer pricing rather than misleading you with new-registration rates.
